Mozilla has announced its 2024 Technology Fund recipients, focusing on projects that combine open-source technology, AI, and environmental justice. The selected projects span six countries - India, France, Kenya, Paraguay, Uganda, and the U.S. Each recipient will receive up to $50,000 along with a year of mentorship and support.
The winning projects will use open-source AI tools for various environmental initiatives, including:
- Tracking methane emissions
- Exposing harmful mining operations
- Monitoring air quality
This cohort builds on Mozilla's broader environmental justice work, including their Climate Commitments and involvement in the Green Screen Coalition. The Mozilla Technology Fund, which launched in 2022, supports open-source technologists working on critical internet issues. Previous cohorts have focused on increasing transparency and reducing bias in AI systems.
The program aims to strengthen both the community and sustainability of these open-source projects, aligning with Mozilla's Trustworthy AI funding principles.
