National Grid is fast-tracking the connection of 20GW of clean energy projects across England and Wales through two main initiatives:
- Transmission Network (10GW):
- 19 battery storage projects will be connected approximately four years earlier than originally planned
- This is achieved by allowing batteries to connect before completing non-essential engineering works
- Battery operation will be managed by the ESO to reduce system impact
- Additional 10GW of mainly battery and hybrid projects may be accelerated in a future phase
- Distribution Network (10GW):
- Focuses on the Midlands, South West England, and South Wales
- Over 200 projects have shown interest in fast-tracked connections
- 16 projects could connect within 12 months
- 180 projects aim to connect within 2-5 years
- Some 'shovel ready' projects could be advanced by up to 5 years
The total 20GW capacity equals six Hinkley Point C nuclear power stations. This initiative is part of a broader collaboration between transmission and distribution networks, working with industry, Ofgem, and the government to accelerate clean energy connections.
