1% For The Planet: Putting Our Purpose Before Our Profits

“Let’s create an environmental legacy together.” It’s bold and hopeful statements like this that we cannot ignore. We have a responsibility as a business to work towards making the world a better place. In fact, this is something we believe in so strongly, that it’s become our new focus for 2021.

But we can’t do it alone. Like any kind of endeavour or mission, those with a common goal need to pull together and make it a group global effort. This is why we are so pleased to announce that AndAnotherDay have become a member of 1% for the Planet.

1% are an organisation who bring ‘dollars and doers’ together to fund and accelerate environmental change. They do this through a model of giving, where every business with a membership commits to donate 1% of gross sales. These contributions then directly fund approved environmental non-profits.

1% of AndAnotherDay’s gross sales in 2021 will go directly to environmental non-profits, focusing on real-world issues such as climate, food and wildlife.

Almost £200m has already been invested through the 1% network and this will continue to grow as more members join. Not only is the organisation working hard to constantly increase membership, but they also work tirelessly to form true partnerships with the nonprofit partners that they work with, extending their efforts beyond just financial support, and providing volunteer time or share-value contributions.

Another brilliant facet of their offering, and something that really paves the way for progress, is the community aspect. The 1% for the Planet Directory includes everybody who has signed up for a membership. This means it’s a great place to find like-minded businesses, of just about any sector, who you may want to work with. This is the true embodiment of a global movement, encouraging not only the growth of its own community but empowering members with better and more ethical options when it comes to finding a supplier, whether that be software, clothing, materials or just about anything.

Why is environment and sustainability important to us?

It’s really a no-brainer. We care deeply for the world around us and understand that our planet needs help. We are designers, developers and strategists with one common goal in mind – to leave the planet a better place than how we found it. It’s a lofty aspiration, but something that we feel can be achieved by working together.

“I have always tried to live my life in a way that does not have a negative impact on the world – by not producing excessive waste and keeping pollution to a minimum. I think it’s now time to turn this upside down and have a positive impact instead.

“Donating to environmental causes, which is directly related to the effort and success of AndAnotherDay, is one way we can do this.”

Keiron Roberts, Founder, AndAnotherDay

We’re proud to be one of over 2,000 members across 45 countries, supporting over 3,500 nonprofit partners across 60 countries. Whilst these numbers are impressive, it’s important to remember that they are made up of thousands of businesses large and small. You don’t have to be Patagonia to save the world – young businesses like us are just as vital. We know it’s an old cliche, but every little helps.

How does this align with the work that we do as a technology agency?

That’s an important question to ask ourselves, and we encourage other businesses to get a little introspective too. If we were a paper company or part of the oil industry, of course, this wouldn’t sit right. We’ve always held the view that the work we do should align with our values as individuals. But it’s only recently that we’ve made those values part of our wider agency strategy.

Our refreshed focus on the fourth sector is putting our purpose before our profits. The modern day digital agency can work with just about any client they want, with many agencies working across a huge range of sectors. But we made a firm decision at the end of last year to channel our efforts and resources entirely into working with businesses and brands who want to join us in improving our planet, whether they’re an ethical brand, a market disruptor or part of the charity sector.
